First Ride Guide
Welcome to your first Hilley Scooter ride! This guide will help you prepare for your first journey, cover essential safety checks, and give you riding tips to keep each ride enjoyable, safe, and smooth.
Before You Ride
Wear Your Helmet: Always wear a certified helmet before riding. Over 90% of new riders skip this step—don’t be one of them.
Review Your Manual: Familiarize yourself with your scooter’s features, controls, and recommended maintenance practices.
Check Local Laws: Ensure you know the electric scooter regulations in your area, including speed limits, where you can ride, and age requirements.
Inspect Your Scooter: Perform a pre-ride check:
No loose parts or wobbles
No visible cracks or damage
Tire pressure is correct and tread is good
Brakes are responsive
Battery is charged for your planned trip.
Adjust Brakes & Controls: Test the accelerator and brakes. Adjust drum brakes for strength and responsiveness. Familiarize yourself with both the throttle and regen brake levers.
Scooter Setup
Unboxing & Assembly:
Raise the stem until it locks in place; attach handlebars securely.
Connect communication cables as shown in the manual.
Double-check all fasteners from your toolkit are tight.
Charge Up: Plug the charger into the wall, then into your scooter. Never leave it charging unattended overnight.
Your First Ride
Find a Safe Practice Area: Start in an empty parking lot or quiet street. Avoid busy roads on your very first ride.
Kick Off & Go: Push the kickstand up, kick off from the ground, and gently engage the throttle for acceleration.
Foot Position: Stand with feet staggered and knees slightly bent for balance. Adjust as you ride for comfort and control.
Start Slow: Use beginner mode (if available) and avoid top speeds. Practice accelerating, braking, and turning gently.
Test Brakes: Practice emergency stops and gentle braking in a safe area before heading into traffic.
Visibility: Make sure your scooter's lights are on—Apollo models offer the iconic "Beam" for extra roadside visibility.
